JTI Tips Central Region Magistrates On SGBV Cases

The Judicial Training Institute on Monday June 6, 2022 commenced a two-day training session of Magistrates deployed in the Central Region on the Management of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) cases at Mestil hotel in Kampala.
The training was flagged off by the Executive Director of the Judicial Training Institute, Hon. Lady Justice Damalie N. Lwanga who decried the growing number of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) cases.
She also emphasized the need for training of criminal justice actors who are involved in SGBV matters to attend workshops regularly for continuous training and skilling as new experiences and good practices keep coming up in SGBV matters.
Hon. Lady Justice Lwanga who made a presentation on Handling of Victims and Witnesses of SGBV also called upon the Magistrates to reduce trial delays of SGBV cases saying that delays in disposing them only makes the situation worse for the victims a sit re- traumatizes them. "We need to work towards having all SGBV cases handled in special courts or sessions, in a specialized manner," she said.
While presenting a paper on Human Rights and Legal framework, Lady Justice Susan Okalany, stressed the need for training of all Judicial Officers on SGBV.
"...These cases are wide-spread and it is important for every Judicial Officer to become an expert," she said. Adding that she was taking the Magistrates through human rights to remind them to have a human rights perspective when making decisions in SGBV cases.
Hon. Justice David Batema made a presentation on understanding Gender and its Key Concepts, where he stressed the implication of abusing power, the need to effect and observe gender equality.
The other topics discussed included; Understanding Gender and its key Concepts, Gender and power, Human Rights and Legal framework on SGBV, Handling Victims and Witnesses of SGBV Cases in Court, Different forms of SGBV, Causes and Effects of SGBV.
